Bay Area Environmental Forum

Project Leader(s)

The Environmental Forum was presented by a coalition of Bay Area environmental groups providing a monthly format for the discussion of current environmental issues. The Forum was held the third Tuesday of each month at the Peninsula Conservation Center in Palo Alto (unless otherwise noted), and typically included an educational program and discussion, a plan for action, and announcements by attending organizations.

There were dozens of forums on myriad topics, and we hope to archive all the info here over time. This page is a work in progress.

Taken for a Ride: The History of the Automobile

June 17, 1997
7 to 9:30pm
Peninsula Conservation Center
3921 E. Bayshore Road, Palo Alto

With investigative journalism, vintage archival footage and candid interviews, “Taken For A Ride” presents a revealing history of the tragic and little-known story of a campaign led by General Motors to dismantle our extensive streetcar systems and replace them with a vast network of urban freeways that facilitates urban sprawl and perpetuates our dependance on the automobile.

After the documentary screening, co-producer Martha Olson will facilitate a discussion on corporate power, the social and environmental implications of transportation, and how we can take action to break our dependence on the automobile and help create transit-oriented communities.

Controlling Exotic Aliens: Restoring Native Habitats

July 15, 1997
7 to 9:30pm
Peninsula Conservation Center
3921 E. Bayshore Road, Palo Alto

Many invasive, non-native plants were originally brought to the Bay Area by people who admired their ornamental qualities. However, many of these species now pose a serious threat to the survival and integrity of native ecosystems.

Biologists now believe that the loss of habitat to non-native species rivals urbanization as a threat to biodiversity. Join us for an informative presentation by the Wildlands Restoration Team and updates by local groups currently doing habitat restoration work along the coast, at Arastradero Preserve, Edgewood Park, and in Yosemite. Learn about these exotic aliens and what you can do to control them.
