Origin

No one quite remembers who came up with it. But it was probably Pete.

Disambiguation

“Bay Area Action” is not the same as “350 Bay Area Action”

Bay Area Action, the nonprofit which operated from 1990 to 2000, should not be confused with 350 Bay Area Action, which is a climate activism organization that has operated from 2012 to present.

While they have similarities of goals and interests, a similar name, and both operate(d) in the San Francisco Bay Area, they are not the same organization and the latter did not grow from the former.

350 Bay Area started in 2008 as a regional hub for Bill McKibben’s 350.org campaign. 350 Bay Area Action is a newer grassroots organization within that network that focuses on political endorsements and direct political action.

While the 350s are very worthwhile organizations, we regret any confusion.

“Bay Area Action” is not “Action Together Bay Area”

Another similarly-named organization is Action Together Bay Area, which started in 2016 and has recently changed their name to Action Together West.

The difference between “Bay Area Action”, and “Bay Area Action Archives”, and the “Bay Area Action History Project”

  • Bay Area Action is the org that existed from 1990 to 2000 and merged with the Peninsula Conservation Center Foundation to become Acterra.
  • Bay Area Action History Project is the new nonprofit formed in 2024 to digitize the physical archives and create a historical website.
  • Bay Area Action Archives is the digital result of the historical archiving project, including this website.

The latter two are somewhat interchangeable, but not quite the same thing.
